Trinity is an underappreciated character in the Matrix franchise, despite enabling Neo’s success. These scenes show that she is the series’ real hero.

Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) is often overshadowed by Neo (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix, but sometimes she is undoubtedly the hero instead of him. He never would have accomplished several dangerous missions without her. For example, Neo would have struggled to save Morpheus and never would have made it to the Machine City without Trinity (assuming he was still attacked and blinded by Agent Smith).

The Matrix Resurrections, which came out almost 20 years after the original Matrix trilogy, gives Trinity some more character development. A new generation looks up to Neo and Trinity, while Trinity in particular has inspired young women. Lexy tells Neo, “I’m here because of her. All I ever wanted was to be like Trinity.” Trinity herself has more scenes in Resurrections in which she takes the lead from Neo. For example, she confronts the Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris) while Neo stands by. Trinity takes out a building with a motorcycle.

In the opening scene of The Matrix Reloaded, Trinity makes an impossible leap off of a moving motorcycle (by bending the laws of gravity within the Matrix) so the motorcycle will crash into a building and destroy it. This is revealed to only be Neo dreaming, but later these exact events play out. Trinity destroys the guardhouse, so she can disable the emergency power network and Neo can reach the Architect of the Matrix.

Neo asks Trinity to stay out of this fight because he is afraid that she will die, but (despite initially agreeing) she is not one to be sidelined. Trinity demonstrates her impressive abilities and enables Neo’s success, as she does often. While she dies in Neo’s dream, he saves her at the last minute, catching her as she jumps out of the building and is shot by an Agent.

9Threatening The Merovingian’s Men

Trinity threatens to destroy the Merovingian…twice.

Trinity, Neo, and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) go to see the Merovingian (Lambert Wilson) because he is holding the Keymaker (Randall Duk Kim) captive, whom they need to help them get to the Source. The Merovingian denies this and his henchmen move to escort the main characters out. Trinity says deadpan, “Touch me and that hand will never touch anything again.” Trinity threatens the Merovingian again when she and Morpheus return to his club in The Matrix Revolutions: Trinity threatens to shoot the Merovingian if he doesn’t order the Trainman to release Neo. Both times, the Merovingian and his men wisely avoid confrontation with Trinity.

8The Opening Scene Of The Matrix

The Matrix opens with Trinity rather than Neo, and the scene builds up to her skills as a fighter. She is speaking to the team in the real world while Agents arrive outside the building she is in. Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) famously tells the police lieutenant that the men sent in after Trinity “are already dead.” Trinity then fights off the police and escapes the Agents. The opening sets up Trinity as the hero, while Neo’s introduction only comes after this.

7Flying Instead Of Neo

Trinity gains one of Neo’s iconic abilities.

Neo is famous for being so skilled at manipulating the laws of physics within the Matrix that he can fly. In Resurrections, Neo can’t remember how to do this. There is a humorous scene of him jumping and failing to take to the sky, saying “Yeah, that’s not happening.” In the climactic moment where Neo and Trinity’s only means of escape is jumping off a building, it is Trinity who starts flying and saves them. Neo and Trinity are seen flying together in the last scene, implying they are beginning a new era of adventures with equal abilities.

Neo is understandably shaken in the first movie when he realizes that his whole life has been a lie. Trinity previously went through the same process with Morpheus and tells Neo, “The Matrix cannot tell you who you are.” Neo is on his way to see the Oracle (Gloria Foster) when Trinity says this, elevating the line’s significance, since the Oracle is another entity that will theoretically determine Neo’s destiny. The heroes learning to forge their own paths is a fundamental theme of the Matrix franchise. This theme is also important to Trinity’s arc in Resurrections, in which she has been given a false identity in the Matrix.

Neo decides to go on a mission to rescue Morpheus from the Agents and tries to prevent Trinity from coming with him. Mocking Neo saying, “I believe I can save him,” Trinity bluntly says, “I believe that Morpheus means more to me than he does to you. I believe if you are really serious about rescuing him, you are going to need my help. And since I am the ranking officer on this ship, if you don’t like it… I believe you can go to hell.” She is absolutely right: She has known Morpheus longer than Neo, Neo can’t tell her what to do, and he needs her help.

4Flying Neo To The Machine City

Neo makes it to the final battle because of Trinity.

Trinity again states that she is coming with Neo in Revolutions when he announces his plan to go to the Machine City. As they are preparing to leave, they are ambushed by Agent Smith who is possessing another human. Smith blinds Neo, so Trinity has to fly the ship. Most likely, Neo would still have been attacked by Smith even if Trinity agreed to stay behind. Smith still has the advantage of Neo not being able to bend the laws of gravity in the real world and Neo not expecting Smith to be in the real world at all. Trinity gets Neo to the Machine City but dies in their crash landing.

3Meeting Neo

Trinity begins to lead Neo out of the Matrix.

The first act of The Matrix sets up the unnamed woman who takes down several police officers and Morpheus as mysterious figures with whom Neo will inevitably cross paths. Trinity approaches Neo before he has learned what the Matrix is as part of Morpheus’ plan to awaken Neo. She begins to lead him “down the rabbit hole” by alluding to what he already knows: that something about their reality is not right. This scene frames Trinity as the character who knows more than Neo, from whom he must learn.

After the iconic scene of Neo and Trinity’s lobby shootout, they continue to infiltrate the building where Morpheus is being held. They are on the roof, where Neo is taken down by an Agent who is about to kill him before Trinity suddenly appears and shoots the Agent. She was right: He did need her help to succeed in his impossible rescue mission. Trinity then tells Tank (Marcus Chong) in the real world that she needs him to upload a pilot program, so she can fly Neo and Morpheus to safety via helicopter.

1Reasserting Her Identity As Trinity

In Resurrections, Trinity has been given a new life in the Matrix, but she is unhappy being a wife and a mother. Trinity seemingly turns down Neo’s offer to pull her out of the Matrix. She likely has mixed feelings about her responsibility to her “husband” and “children.” Yet her husband repeatedly addressing her as Tiffany is the final push. She has been subconsciously longing to break free and reclaim her identity. While Trinity has always been vital to the story of The Matrix because she pushes Neo to realize his destiny, this moment focuses on her character alone.
